About Root Canal Therapy

It is hard to smile when you are in pain from an infected tooth, which is why a root canal treatment may be needed. When a patient needs a root canal, the soft inner section of the tooth (pulp) is infected, and that can mean to tooth may be starting to die. New York, NY, cosmetic and general dentist, Dr. Andrew Reingold can remove the infected pulp from the tooth using the appropriate sedation to make the procedure less stressful and painless. This can save the tooth from extraction, allow for healing, and prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth. We offer excellent tooth restoration services such as CEREC dental crowns and bridges to make your healthy smile beautiful again.

At Everlasting Smile, we want you get the treatment you need and deserve. It is not in your best interest to put off treating a painful toothache. If the infection in the tooth is not treated, other teeth may become infected and/or the bacteria may enter the blood stream and infect other parts of the body. Call and schedule your dental examination and consultation today. We want to see you smile again.

What to Expect

A root canal is usually performed with local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gums and sedation may be added if needed. The dentist will remove the pulp from the infected tooth/teeth, then the dentist will place a crown or inject filling material. Some patients are at higher risk of developing an infection (usually patients with heart problems like congenital defects and artificial heart valves), so the dentist may prescribe a round of antibiotics before and after the root canal treatment.

Treatment Aftercare

If only local sedation is used, you will be able to drive and recover at home, but some sedation options may require you to have a responsible adult pick you up. Patients will have temporary numbness and some may have minor discomfort that can usually be treated with an over-the-counter painkiller. If a temporary crown was placed over the tooth, the permanent crown will be placed and fitted at a separate appointment. After a root canal, oral care including brushing and flossing at home plus visits to the dentist as recommended are important to maintain the health of the treated tooth/teeth.

Anticipated Costs

A root canal procedure is usually covered in part by dental insurance, but it may not cover additional expenses for emergency care. Our office accepts many forms of payment and we can help patients with financing plans, if needed.
